Texas Hold'em Strategy

Master Texas Hold'em from the ground up. Preflop hand selection, position play, pot odds, bet sizing, bluffing, and advanced concepts that separate winners from losers.

1. Preflop Hand Selection

The most impactful decision in poker is which hands to play before the flop. Playing too many hands is the #1 leak for losing players. A tight-aggressive approach wins at every level.

Tier 1 — Premium (Always Raise)

Raise from any position. Re-raise (3-bet) if someone raises before you.

AA KK QQ AKs AKo

Tier 2 — Strong (Raise from Most Positions)

Raise from middle position onward. Consider 3-betting against late position opens.

JJ TT AQs AQo AJs KQs

Tier 3 — Playable (Position-Dependent)

Play from cutoff and button. Occasionally from middle position with good table conditions.

99 88 77 ATs A5s-A2s KJs QJs JTs T9s 98s 87s

Tier 4 — Speculative (Button/Blind Only)

Only play from the button or blinds. Need deep stacks and multi-way pots for implied odds.

2. Position Strategy

Position is the single most important factor in poker profitability. The button (dealer) is the most profitable seat because you always act last postflop.

Position Abbreviation % of Hands to Play Strategy
Under the Gun UTG 10-12% Only premium and strong hands. Tightest position.
UTG+1 / UTG+2 MP 12-15% Slightly wider. Add suited broadways and medium pairs.
Hijack HJ 18-22% Open up with suited connectors and wider broadways.
Cutoff CO 25-30% Aggressive stealing spot. Wide range, frequent raises.
Button BTN 35-45% Widest opening range. You always have position postflop.
Small Blind SB 30-40% Raise or fold (rarely call). Will be out of position postflop.
Big Blind BB Defend 40-60% Already invested. Defend wide against late position raises.

3. Pot Odds & Math

Pot Odds

Compare the cost of a call to the total pot to determine if a call is profitable.

Formula: Call / (Pot + Opponent Bet + Call)

Example: Pot $80, opponent bets $40, you call $40

$40 / ($80 + $40 + $40) = 25% — need 25%+ equity to call

The Rule of 2 and 4

Quick method to estimate your equity when drawing.

Flop to River: Outs x 4 = approximate %

Turn to River: Outs x 2 = approximate %

Flush draw (9 outs): Flop = 36%, Turn = 18%

Common Draw Odds

Draw Outs Flop to River Turn to River
Flush draw 9 35% 19.6%
Open-ended straight draw 8 31.5% 17.4%
Gutshot straight draw 4 16.5% 8.7%
Flush + straight combo draw 15 54.1% 32.6%
Two overcards 6 24.1% 13%
Set to full house/quads 7 27.8% 15.2%
One pair to two pair/trips 5 20.4% 10.9%

4. Bet Sizing

Preflop Open

Standard open raise. Add 1BB per limper. In tournaments, 2-2.2x is standard.

2.5-3x BB

C-Bet (Flop)

Small on dry boards (A72 rainbow), large on wet boards (JT9 two-tone). Bet smaller with your whole range.

25-75% Pot

Turn Bet

Narrowing ranges means larger bets. Turn bets are more committed than flop bets.

50-75% Pot

River Bet

Value bets and bluffs. Polarized betting (big with very strong or bluffs, check with medium strength).

50-125% Pot

3-Bet

In position: 3x. Out of position: 3.5-4x. Larger vs bigger opens.

3x Original Raise

5. Bluffing Strategy

When to Bluff

 • You have a draw that can improve (semi-bluff)
 • Board favors your perceived range
 • You're in position
 • Opponent has shown weakness (check-check)
 • Few opponents (heads-up is best)
 • You have blockers to opponent's strong hands

When NOT to Bluff

 • Against multiple opponents
 • Against calling stations (they never fold)
 • On very wet, connected boards
 • When you've been caught bluffing recently
 • When the pot is already huge (committed)
 • When you're on tilt or emotional

6. Postflop Play

Board Texture Reading

The texture of the flop determines your strategy. Dry boards (like A-7-2 rainbow) favor the preflop aggressor because few draws are possible. Wet boards (like J-T-9 with two hearts) have many draws and are more dangerous.

Dry Board: K♠ 7♥ 2♦

C-bet small (25-33%), bet frequently. Few draws possible.

Wet Board: J♥ T♥ 8♠

C-bet larger (66-75%), be selective. Many draws out there.

Hand Categories Postflop

Value hands: Top pair good kicker or better. Bet for value on all streets.

Drawing hands: Flush draws, straight draws. Semi-bluff (bet/raise) for fold equity + draw equity.

Marginal hands: Middle pair, weak top pair. Check and control pot size. Call small bets.

Trash: Missed completely. Check-fold or bluff if the spot is right.

7. Common Mistakes to Avoid

Playing Too Many Hands

Fix: Tighten up. Play 15-25% of hands. Quality over quantity.

Calling Too Much

Fix: Raise or fold. Calling is the weakest action. Be aggressive.

Ignoring Position

Fix: Play 2-3x more hands on the button than UTG.

Not Bet Sizing Properly

Fix: Use pot-relative sizing, not arbitrary amounts. $10 into $100 pot won't fold anyone.

Playing Scared Money

Fix: Don't play stakes you can't afford. Scared money loses money.

Chasing Every Draw

Fix: Calculate pot odds first. Not every draw is worth calling.

Tilting After Bad Beats

Fix: Bad beats are part of poker. Take a break if you're emotional.

Never Bluffing

Fix: Predictable players get exploited. Balance your range with bluffs.

8. Advanced Concepts

Range Thinking

Don't put opponents on a single hand. Think about their entire range of possible hands given the action. "They could have AA-JJ, AK, AQ, or a suited connector here."

GTO vs Exploitative Play

Game Theory Optimal (GTO) play is unexploitable but doesn't maximize profit against weak opponents. Use GTO as your baseline, then deviate to exploit specific player tendencies.

SPR (Stack-to-Pot Ratio)

The effective stack divided by the pot. Low SPR (<4) = commit with top pair. High SPR (>13) = need very strong hands to stack off. Plan your hand based on SPR.

Implied Odds

How much more you can win on future streets if you hit your draw. Small pocket pairs and suited connectors have great implied odds against deep stacks.

Blockers

Cards in your hand that reduce the probability of your opponent having certain hands. Holding the A♥ blocks the nut flush draw, making your bluffs more effective on heart boards.
