Understanding Poker Equity

Equity is the percentage of the pot you "own" based on your probability of winning. If you have 65% equity in a $100 pot, your expected value from that pot is $65. Making profitable poker decisions means getting your money in when you have more equity than the pot odds require.

Pre-flop equity is calculated before any community cards are dealt. This is useful for understanding starting hand strength and deciding whether to call all-in pre-flop bets. For example, pocket Aces have roughly 85% equity against a random hand.

Post-flop equity changes dramatically as community cards are revealed. A hand with 45% pre-flop equity might jump to 95% after flopping a set, or drop to 5% when an opponent hits their flush draw. Our calculator handles both scenarios.

Pot Odds vs Equity: When to Call

The golden rule: Call when your equity exceeds your pot odds. If you need to call $20 into a $100 pot, you need 20/(100+20) = 16.7% equity to break even. If our calculator shows you have 25% equity, it's a profitable call.

Example: Profitable Call

Pot: $80. Opponent bets $20. You need 20/120 = 16.7% equity. You have a flush draw (roughly 35% equity on the flop). Easy call.

Example: Fold

Pot: $40. Opponent bets $40. You need 40/120 = 33.3% equity. You have a gutshot (roughly 8.5% equity). Clear fold.
