Poker Bankroll Management

The complete guide to protecting and growing your poker bankroll. Buy-in requirements, moving up/down rules, variance expectations, and how rakeback fits into your bankroll strategy.

Why Bankroll Management Matters

Bankroll management is the most important skill in poker that isn't about playing cards. Without it, even winning players go broke. Here's the math:

Without BRM

80%

of winning players go broke due to insufficient bankroll for variance

With BRM (30 BI)

<5%

risk of ruin for a player with a 3bb/100 win rate

+ Rakeback

+30-50%

faster bankroll growth with rakeback income

Bankroll Requirements by Stakes

Cash Games (6-Max NLH)

Stakes Max Buy-In Conservative (30 BI) Professional (50 BI) Aggressive (20 BI)
NL2 ($0.01/$0.02) $2 $60 $100 $40
NL5 ($0.02/$0.05) $5 $150 $250 $100
NL10 ($0.05/$0.10) $10 $300 $500 $200
NL25 ($0.10/$0.25) $25 $750 $1,250 $500
NL50 ($0.25/$0.50) $50 $1,500 $2,500 $1,000
NL100 ($0.50/$1.00) $100 $3,000 $5,000 $2,000
NL200 ($1/$2) $200 $6,000 $10,000 $4,000
NL500 ($2.50/$5) $500 $15,000 $25,000 $10,000
NL1000 ($5/$10) $1,000 $30,000 $50,000 $20,000

Tournaments (MTT)

Tournaments have much higher variance than cash games. You'll go on longer losing streaks, but the upside is also larger. Minimum 100 buy-ins, ideally 200+.

$5-$11 MTTs

$500-$1,000

100 buy-ins minimum

$20-$55 MTTs

$2,000-$5,500

100 buy-ins minimum

$100-$215 MTTs

$10,000-$21,500

100 buy-ins minimum

When to Move Up and Down

Move UP When...

  • You have 30+ buy-ins for the next level
  • Proven win rate over 50,000+ hands at current stake
  • You feel confident and aren't scared of the money
  • You can articulate why you're beating your current stake
  • Current games feel routine (not challenging enough)

Shot-taking rule: Allocate 5 buy-ins for a shot at the next level. If you lose all 5, drop back immediately. No shame, no ego.

Move DOWN When...

  • Bankroll drops below 20 buy-ins for current stake
  • You've lost 5+ buy-ins in a single session
  • Decisions feel pressured by the money at stake
  • You're playing scared or too tight to be profitable
  • Persistent losing streak affecting your mental game

Key principle: Moving down is not failure. It's the smart, disciplined play. Every pro has moved down at some point.

Understanding Variance

Even winning players have downswings. Here's what to expect at different win rates over 100,000 hands:

Win Rate Player Type Expected Worst Downswing Min Bankroll Needed
2 bb/100 Break-even grinder 20-30 buy-ins 50+ buy-ins
4 bb/100 Solid winner 15-20 buy-ins 30-40 buy-ins
6 bb/100 Strong winner 10-15 buy-ins 25-30 buy-ins
8 bb/100 Crusher 8-12 buy-ins 20-25 buy-ins
10+ bb/100 Elite 5-10 buy-ins 20 buy-ins

PLO note: Pot Limit Omaha has approximately 2x the variance of NLH. Use 50-75 buy-ins for PLO cash games and 200+ for PLO tournaments.

How Rakeback Accelerates Bankroll Growth

Rakeback acts as a bankroll safety net and growth accelerator. Here's how 30% rakeback affects a NL100 player generating $1,000/month in rake:

Without Rakeback

$400/mo

Win rate only (4 bb/100)

With 30% Rakeback

$700/mo

$400 win rate + $300 rakeback

Bankroll Growth

75% faster

Move up stakes sooner

Even during losing months, rakeback provides guaranteed income. A player losing at -2 bb/100 with 30% rakeback still breaks even or profits at most stakes.

The 5 Golden Rules of Bankroll Management

1

Separate Poker Money from Life Money

Your poker bankroll is an investment, not spending money. Keep it in a dedicated account. Never use it for rent, bills, or personal expenses. If you need money, cash out and reduce your bankroll — don't play with scared money.

2

Never Risk More Than 5% in One Session

Set a stop-loss of 3-5 buy-ins per session. If you hit it, quit. No exceptions. This protects you from tilt-induced mega-sessions that destroy bankrolls overnight.

3

Move Down Without Ego

If your bankroll drops below 20 buy-ins, move down immediately. The fastest way to recover is by winning at a lower stake, not by gambling at a higher one. Every pro has moved down.

4

Factor in Rakeback When Choosing Rooms

A room with 40% rakeback effectively reduces your rake by 40%. This is equivalent to a 2-4 bb/100 boost to your win rate. Always calculate effective rakeback when choosing where to play.

5

Cash Out Profits Regularly

Once your bankroll exceeds your target for your stake (e.g., 50+ buy-ins when you only need 30), cash out the excess. This locks in profits and gives tangible reward for your work.
