Reading Opponents Online: Digital Tells and HUD Stats

Online Tells Are Real

You can't see physical tells online, but timing patterns, bet sizing, and statistical profiles tell you everything you need to know. The information is MORE reliable than physical tells because it's data-driven.

Timing Tells

• Instant call — Usually a draw or marginal made hand. They decided to call before the action reached them.
• Long pause then raise — Often genuine strength. They're deciding between calling and raising (not between folding and calling).
• Instant raise — Polarized. Either the nuts or a bluff pre-planned. Context matters.
• Long pause then check — Weakness. They considered betting but decided against it. Fire a bet.
• Using the time bank unnecessarily — Sometimes an angle (hollywooding), sometimes genuine indecision.

Bet Sizing Tells

• Min-bet on the river — Almost always a thin value bet. Rarely a bluff (why risk chips for so little fold equity?)
• Overbet (1.5x+ pot) — Polarized. Either the nuts trying to get max value, or a bluff trying to push you off a hand.
• Small c-bet on dry board — Likely has something. On dry boards, small bets achieve the same fold equity as large ones.
• Large c-bet on wet board — Could be a draw building a pot, or a strong hand charging draws.

Essential HUD Stats

VPIP (Voluntarily Put $ In Pot)

How often they play a hand. Fish: 40%+. Recreational: 25-35%. TAG: 18-24%. Nit: 12-16%.

PFR (Pre-Flop Raise %)

How often they raise preflop. Compare to VPIP. Large gap (VPIP 30, PFR 8) = passive calling station. Small gap (VPIP 22, PFR 18) = aggressive player.

3-Bet %

How often they 3-bet. Average: 6-8%. Low (<5%): only has premiums. High (>10%): 3-betting light. Adjust accordingly.

Fold to 3-Bet

If >65%: 3-bet them relentlessly as a bluff. If <50%: only 3-bet for value. This stat alone can earn you thousands over a year.

C-Bet Flop / Turn

High c-bet (70%+): they bet without a hand often. Float them and take it away on the turn. Low c-bet (<50%): when they bet, they have it.
