A solid NLHE winner at 4bb/100 with a standard deviation of 80bb/100 will experience:

• A 5+ buy-in downswing: very common (happens multiple times per year)
• A 10+ buy-in downswing: common (once or twice per year)
• A 20+ buy-in downswing: possible (once every few years)
• A 30+ buy-in downswing: rare but real (career possibility)

Variance by Game Type

• NLHE Cash — Standard deviation ~80bb/100. Moderate variance.
• PLO Cash — SD ~120-150bb/100. High variance. Need bigger bankroll.
• MTTs — Extremely high variance. You'll cash in only 15-20% of tournaments. Need 100+ buy-ins.
• SNGs — Moderate variance. Better than MTTs, worse than cash. 50+ buy-ins.
